A lot of marketers are taking advantage of this. Businesses are making sure that they are visible to their target audience by creating engaging content for social media.

But engagement is more than just your number of subscribers, a follower double-tapping your Instagram post or giving a “love” reaction to your Facebook status.

How do we keep our readers engaged and hooked on our every word?

1.) Be updated with the latest trends

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat… Always know what’s the latest buzz around you.

What have people been buzzing about? Are there any new expressions, videos or memes becoming viral lately?

Talk about those things! If you can incorporate popular trends in your content, you will be able to relate to your audience better.

Most of us are hardwired to be “in the know” with what’s going on around us and the rest of the world. Social media has made this a hundred times easier for anyone on the internet.

Feed this need by being people’s go-to website or page when they want to know about the latest news and hippest trends. They’ll definitely look forward to your next posts!

2.) Add visual stimulation

They say that a picture paints a thousand words. It’s true, both for offline and online marketing.

Use images to add life to your articles. There are so many sites where you can find quality photos for free! Choose a few that will help convey your words better.

Throw in some infographics to arouse curiosity and interest.

And to make it more exciting, you can share or create your own video content!

In an article published in The Guardian, videos are said to be the future of online marketing.

Not everyone has the time or the interest to read articles but it’s so easy to click the play button and watch videos.

Diversify your content and people will keep coming back for more.

3.) Listen to your audience

Learn how to listen to your audience and you’ll know exactly what to do.

One of the biggest mistakes you can do is to write only about what you want to read instead of what your audience is looking for.

What do they want to know about? What are problems you can help them solve?

The best way to find out is to ask them!

Encourage them to leave comments and suggestions. Or you can make it fun by making them answer surveys and quizzes.

Once you identify what their biggest desires or worries are, it will be easier for you to write content that will address these things.

Speak as if your content is made solely for them and you will be able to connect emotionally with your audience and persuade them effectively.

4.) Freebies are your friends

The reason why people love free stuff is because it makes them feel like they achieved or acquired something with little to no effort at all.

Tap into that!

Share free resources such as e-books, research materials or productivity tools.

Offer something that will solve a problem or make their life easier.

You can opt to offer these freebies for downloads in exchange for their email. You can now get closer to them and possibly be able to market your products and services in the future.

It’s pretty simple: Give value, get value.

Instead of just pitching or selling to people on your posts, deliver information that makes your audience or consumers more intelligent. Be seen as an authority in your niche.

I remembering hearing this in a podcast: “Getting found by people is one thing. Getting people to stick around is another.”

Answer questions. Give advice. Solve problems.

When you deliver consistent, valuable information to your audience, you will be rewarded with their business and loyalty.

Always remember… Don’t get caught up in the number of your followers or likes.

Engagement means building a relationship and genuine connections with your audience.

I love it that more and more people are following me and are inspired with my content — but that’s not what’s most important to me.

If I only had ONE follower, and that one follower became GREAT and transformed his life… I’d take that 10 times out of 10 versus having billions of people liking my status.
